And we are home...

So, the group from St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Reservation is now home!

Our apologizes to those who tried to follow us on our journey to Alkali Lake on the Blog. It turned out that we had very limited internet access while we were there and the days we spent traveling along roads that had poor cell phone coverage...so much for mobile blogging.

A great time was had by all. When we arrived to Alkali Lake we were greated by a large camping area where we pitched our tents for the two nights we were there. Jim and Robert were able to participate in a sweat on Saturday morning which took most of the morning and afternoon.

Several good speakers were at the Alkali Lake Round Up and much information was gained from the sobriety movement up at Alkali Lake.

Everyone enjoyed themselves at the sobriety dance...especially the first night which featured everyone from Rosebud out in the Arbor dancing away.

On our way home we stopped off at St. Ignatius Mission and at Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Great trip home.

I think everyone agrees that the best time of the trip was the trip itself! Everyone got to know everyone and a lot of bonding occurred.

Photos of the trip to follow later this afternoon...

Keep praying!!!!!

Alkali Lake awaits

Patrick Haggerson and daughter, Helen, arrived here in Alkali Lake on Saturday night. Since then Patrick has been doing his usual work in the community and has been joined by Helen during the evenings to prepare the campsite, help Arthur D. put up a teepee and prepare for the arrival of the Betty Ford Center staff, Alumni and friends.

Yesterday (09-07-08) Mike N., Deb M (Patrick's wife), David B. and Greg D arrived from Palm Springs on the plane. Jean M. and Sterling Z. arrived from Los Angeles. Arthur D. and wife, Jeannie had a wonderful sweat lodge ready for us in the evening.

Today, we will tour the community, go in the sweat and take it easy. Russ P. flyes in From Vancouver this afternoon and Lyle P. (guest speaker from Atlanta, GA) arrives this evening. Kate S. (guest speaker) and her husband, Michael, will be arriving from San Diego. We'll have a meeting and sweat lodge and will keep our family from SFM/Rosebud in our prayers.

All is well, we're learning on a daily basis how to live, laugh and love!!!!!

Billings MT

Here is a run down of todays events...

Left KINI at 8:00 am.

Picked up Jim S at White River at 8:45 am.

Off to Rapid City to pick up some items for the digital camera. Saw Fr. Hatcher and Fr. Richard there....shocked them!

We went to St. Joseph Labre's Mission in Ashland Montana. he place is huge and well done... Saw the Museum and gift store and the church. Also saw "Soaring Eagle" the retirement center. Great stop!

We then went on and saw the Battle of Little Big Horn National Park. Way cool! Jim and I walked around and a Canadian guy came up and shared with us all of the information he knew about Lakota people...all of which was wrong! :-) Funny...

Decided to stay the night in Billings MT and head out tomorrow at 6 am. We think we are going to put in another 10 or 12 hour day so that we can be closer to the Canadian border on Friday so the trip to Alkali Lake is shorter.

Good night!

ON OUR WAY!!!!!!!

Wed. 730 pm Central time. We just left the Battle of Little Big Horn Monument and are heading west. Trying to get to Billings MT tonight. Spirits are high and all is going well

July 7th Helen and Patrick's Update Sober Quest 2008

Day Three of Sober Quest 2008: We left Seattle about 10:00 AM and crossed the US/Canadian Border about noon. By 1:00 PM we were having coffee and snacks with Earl Moulton and his wife Maureen. I met them both 2 years at Vision Quest in Alkali Lake. Earl is a retired RCMP Director from Saskatchewan Province. He was one of the individuals who initiated the move for the RCMP to apologize to First Nations about the residential schools debacle about three years ago. The Canadian government followed suite recently.

It was fascinating listening to him talk about the various other projects he has got going like a yearly Fraser River canoe trip in which he invites RCMP officers, First Nations youth and parents and various community leaders to float down the Fraser River for 4 days and build positive, sober and supportive relationships. Earl and Maureen are also on the board of a private treatment center called Vision Quest Recovery Society. He said that one aspect of the treatment that he is especially proud of is their positive outcomes with meth users. I will look into it further as any program having success with meth deserves attention.

Earl was mentioned a number of times on the power-point that Charlene Belleau used in her presentation at the BFI Consensus Conference in 2006. He has been a strong friend of the Alkali Lake Sobriety Movement and a leader in building bridges between the RCMP (predominantly non-native and First Nations) He is an individual worth staying connected to. I plan to invite him and Maureen to participate in our PIR program.

3rd Annual Youth for Sobriety Powwow: This was an amazing event. I can only hope the Round-up is so well attended and inspiring. This was organized by some of the young, sober members of the community. They had visitors from various locations in /B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. In fact their was a drum and singing group from Saskatchewan made up of an extended family of young males ranging in ages from 9 to 26. They are all very committed to sobriety and when they saw an e-mail about the powwow a few weeks back, they called and asked to drum and sing. The quality of their music is excellent. The event, like the Round-up was a comp-out and a huge family event. Kids of 3 or 4 yrs old up to elders of 80+yrs were dressed in their regalia and dancing around the arbor. It was beautiful to watch.

Helen and Patrick's Update July 3rd and 4th

Thursday, July 3rd: Helen and I had a wonderful send-off in front of the Daniels Building at 10:00 AM. We had around 16 people there using the Talking Stick that Mike accepted for BFC at the 30th Annual Alkali Lake AA Round-up in 2006. The experience was moving for all of us. I felt a great sense of responsiblity in representing BFC/BFI in being part of this Quest to encourage, support and celebrate recovery at the Betty Ford Center, Alkali Lake, the St. Francis Mission and Rosebud Reservation in SD.

Helen and I reflected back throughout the day on how incredible our send-off was and all the words and prayers of encouragement we had received. We laughed at the sight of the food cart being rolled out for us to take on our trip. What a feast. One of our challenges throughout Day One was to keep driving instead of pulling into another rest stop to sample some more of the deliscious food we hadn't gotten to yet.

Day One was somewhat challenging in that we had to drive through the LA area with all the intense traffic and it was very hot all day. We were also getting used to being in close quarters together for that long.

We received a call from Robert Doody at the St. Francis Mission wishing us well and telling about the fact that KINI FM 96.1 would be airing prayers in English and Lakota on a regular basis asking the Creator for the inspiration, protection and support needed to complete the Quest successfully and to begin a sobriety movement, like Alkali Lake, there at the Rosebud Reservation. He indicated that Helen and I (Team California, BFC/BFI) would be included in those prayers.

Later in the day I received a call from my son, Ryan, in Iowa who has almost 17 months sober. He told us that he had to quit his job because his sobriety was at risk because of it. He said he knew he would have to suffer a bit financially in the short run but that the job wasn't worth his sobriety. It made me really proud of him. I told him that choice was one that many people wouldn't be able to make. I also told him how important his sobriety was to the whole family and thanked him for his efforts to maintain it.

We made it to Williams, CA which is about an hour north of Sacramento. We were both tired and I was wondering if it might have made more sense to fly.

Friday July 4th: New Day, beautiful morning. It was actually cool. I jogged and stretched and felt renewed. I told Helen that we really had to focus and make it to Seattle. She said "fine". I think Helen was wondering if flying might have been a better choice as we started Day Two. Shortly after getting on the road, however, something changed and we seemed to settle in a "road groove". Helen brought her I Pod with 1700 songs on it. She had plugged into the stereo and shared some of the pieces she thought I might like. She had some Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Louie Armstrong and Beattles. I encouraged her to go ahead and take out the stops and share from the full spectrum of her songs even ones she didn't think I would like. Wow, did I get a lesson in music. We listened to such a wide range and it seemed to draw us closer. I had to let go my bias against "rap", Death Metal, Screamer, techno etc. I think the Creator gave me an extra boost of tolerance throughout the day. I ended up liking some of the songs. We also worked on a new children's song about living with "treatment and recovery". Our hope is to bring home 2 new songs, one going and one returning. We'll sing them to you on our return to BFC.

The other element that really lifted us was the natural beauty the further north we travelled. I had never been further north than Ukiah, CA. I was so moved by the view of Mt. Shasta, that we pulled over at a "vista point" and I took out my Sober Quest poster, put it on my tail gate and had Helen take a picture with the peak in the back ground. Unfortunately I haven't been able to down load the pictures on to the computer. There seems to be a problem with the camera. Hopefully we will be able to fix it. I've attached the one picture we were able to access.

We travelled 12 hours, had some excellent "daddy/daughter" time and made it to Seattle. The entire day was filled with incredible views. Helen and I both spoke about moving to Oregon sometime soon. We also wanted to move to WA and today will be enamored with British Columbia. We will arrive in Alkali Lake this evening. That means tomorrow we will be able to attend the final day of the 3rd Annual Youth for Sobriety Powwow at the same location where the Round-up will be held next weekend. We will also be arriving in Williams Lake for the last day of the Williams Lake Stampede Rodeo (one huge drunk fest). Wow! So much to do and so little time!! I think we''ll head to the Powwow! :)

Lots of Love your way!!

Alkali Lake or bust... The Betty Ford Center staff ready to move...

Staff from the Betty Ford Center are ready to go on "Sober Quest 2008".

The journey is on its way...

Novena Prayer to Matt Talbot

Here is the basic Novena prayer that we are asking everyone to say while we are on the road...

Each day I will be posting the full prayer that will be broadcast on radio station KINI.

"Lord, in your servant, Matt Talbot you have given us a wonderful example of triumph over addiction, of devotion to duty, and of lifelong reverence of the Holy Sacrament. May his life of prayer and penance give us courage to take up our crosses and follow in the footsteps of Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Father, if it be your will that your beloved servant should be glorified by your Church, make known by your heavenly favours the power he enjoys in your sight. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen."

And in Lakota...

"Itacan, wo'ilake nithawa, Matt Talbot, el otapeya mani pica wan wastehca ca unyak'u pi, wayatkan aya ic'iye etan igluhlaye, wowasi tawa el ic'ic'u, na Yutapi wakan el oni tawa ki ataya yu'onihan.
